Legal Stuff
The original materials on this site are made openly available via a Creative Commons license that permits free use and modification of the materials, provided the use meets three conditions:
- The use is non-commercial. I specifically permit instructors at non-profit educational institutions to use and modify the materials.
- The use cites me and the OpenFiction Project as a source. The following text should be used for attribution: "(Some) content courtesy Stephen Carson and the OpenFiction Project." Please link back to the OpenFiction Project Courseware home page where possible, and I'd appreciate an e-mail notifying me of the use, but this is not required.
- Any works you create that incorporate original materials from this site must also be made available under the same licensing conditions; that is, since I've shared this with you, you need to share things that you create out of it. If I become aware of a significant number of derivative works, I'll likely add a section to the site to facilitate their distribution.
Note that the license covers both the content and the HTML coding for the site.
If you are not aware of Creative Commons, as an artist, you should be. A while back, copyright laws are changed such that the moment you write something down, it becomes fully covered by copyright law, whether you wanted it to be or not. If you have created something that might have more value shared than held locked away (such as teaching materials), Creative Commons provides and ideal--and easy--way to unlock it without giving it all away. I encourage you to go to their site and learn more.
A note of caution about the materials: I've used a few quotes here and there without permission of the owners. I've tried to keep such use to a minimum, and have used the materials in the clear context of a work of criticism. My view is that this fits the legal definitions of fair use, but these quotes are explicitly not covered by the Creative Commons license of the site, and you use them at your own peril.
You'll also notice there are no exercises from What If? included on the site. I don't have permission to reproduce them, and believe that to do so would not be fair use, as it would impact the sales of the book adversely. If you'd like to do the exercises, please go buy the book. It is well worth the asking price.
