Fictional Narrative Basics - Beginning
Completion Date: End of Week 1
[ Previous ][ 7 ][ Next ]
One of our goals for the class is to generate a pool of first draft writing and story ideas that you will be able to draw on as the class progresses and as you continue to write after the class is over. This material is not expected to be polished prose or fully developed stories, but rather an opportunity for you to experiment and write without consequence, whether you write badly or well.

You'll be surprised at how often you'll return to exercises like these that you've left sitting for a year or two, long enough for you to develop some perspective, and you'll find some genuinely good writing you couldn't see buried in the dirt at the time you wrote it.

To begin the semester, and to stretch your fictional muscles, you are going to complete at least one of the following story generation exercises. Before you look at the exercises themselves, read the introduction to the "Beginnings" section of What If?. Then read through the descriptions of all the exercises listed below, and select the one or two that appeal to you most. Complete the exercise(s) before moving on. The exercise(s) will be submitted to me, but will not be posted on the course site. You should include copies in the "Beginnings" section of your own craftbook.

What If? Exercise 1 - First Sentences, p. 3
What If? Exercise 5 - Person, Place and Song, p. 15
What If? Exercise 10 - People From the Past, p. 28
What If? Exercise 14 - Things that Happen to You, p. 36
What If? Exercise 15 - Creative Wrong Memory, p. 38

Beginning Exercise 2 (Req.) - Submit Response
