Four central elements of fictional narrative that all writers must understand and control are point of view, character, description, and plot. The remainder of this discussion unit is devoted to an exploration of these elements, and is divided into sections addressing each. I've structured the course so that you may start by examining whichever of the four elements seems like the most natural starting point for you.
Having completed the writing exercises in this section, and having chosen your selected story from Best American, you should be developing at least a sense of where your fictional interests lie. Think for a few minutes about what interested you in the story you chose from Best American. What is the character? The narrative voice (the point of view)? Did you find the situation compelling? Did the description captivate you?
Also think about the exercises you chose to complete in this first section. The options for the third writing exercise were drawn from the discussions of plot, point of view, and character in What If?. I added the last exercise on description, a topic for which What If? has no section. The choice you made for that writing exercise is probably also an indication for where your interests as a writer lie, and which direction you might choose in completing the discussion unit.
