Fictional Narrative Basics - Beginning
Completion Date: End of Week 1
[ Previous ][ 12 | Next ]
As you begin the other sections of this discussion unit, you should also begin to draft your story. Deadlines for the story are as follows:

  • The first four pages of your draft are due at the end of week 3.
  • The full first draft is due at the end of week 6.(at the end of the "Getting and Giving Help" discussion unit)
  • The second draft is due after workshops at the end of week 13.

You are going to want to give yourself enough time to make several attempts at the beginning of the story if necessary. You may also find things you want to go back and incorporate or change as you move through the first discussion unit.

The story should be between ten and twelve pages at minimum, and may be longer. Develop the story out of one of the writing exercises you've done so far, if possible, but in any case, write a brand new story for this class. Don't bring an old one that you've written before. You have no restriction so far as style or genre--write the story that you want to write. I'll be more than happy to take extra looks at drafts and make suggestions if you feel stuck.

Try if you can to set aside a few hours each day, or every other day, to work on the story so that you don't have to pull an all-nighter to do it. Writing is a habit you've got to get yourself into if you are going to write well.

I will post your stories to the class site for our class critiques. The story you present should be carefully edited for grammar and punctuation. This is not a freshman composition course, and we will not be talking about grammar except in how it connects to fictional craft. I will scan each document I post if I have time for errant special characters caused by translation to HTML, but I will not change misspellings, typos, grammatical errors, etc. Take pride in what you submit.

In addition to the story, you will be asked to submit with both your first and second drafts a critical reflection on your drafting process and the decisions you made in your writing. In particular, you'll want to 1) Identify your goals in the draft, and 2) Describe the techniques you used to try to meet those goals.

Good Luck!
