In this section, "Beginning," we will approach the idea of beginnings on several levels. First, this section serves as your beginning point for the course material itself. Working through this section will be your introduction to how the course structure works on a nuts-and-bolts level. Please work your way though this and all sections of the course page by page, using the "next" and "previous" links at the top and bottom of each page to move forward and back.
On selected pages, you will come across assignments with "Submit Response" prompts at the bottom of the page. Please use these prompts to respond. When submitting assignments, please read the questions posed carefully and respond with thought. Just because there are a range or series of questions for an assignment does not mean you can wander onto other topics. Take care also to correct any grammatical errors or misspellings. In addition to comments, I will grade most assignments on the following scale:
check plus (A+ to B+ range) check (B to C range) check minus (C- to D range)
In upcoming sections of the coursework, there are more assignments included in the coursework than are required for successful completion of the course. The assignments are marked as either being required (Req.) or optional (Opt.). By the time you have completed each discussion unit, you must have completed all required assignments. You may then choose from among the optional assignments to fulfill the total number assigned.
For instance, in the four sections of the "Fictional Narratives Basics" discussion unit that follow this "Beginning" section, there are seven required assignments (two each in "Plot," "Point of View," and "Description"; one in "Character"). Each week during the discussion unit you are required to complete four total assignments, so if you move through each section one at a time, you will be completing the one or two required assignments in each section as well as one or two optional assignments to bring the total number completed up to the assigned four. An overview of all coursework assignments may be found in the Assignments section of the coursework.
