In addition to submitting all required assignments, you will also be posting these required assignments to the course discussion board. Please keep in mind that required (Req.) exercises will not be counted as received until they have been BOTH e-mailed to me and posted to the course site.
Starting in the second week of the course, you will find links within discussions that send you to related topics in other sections of the discussion unit. You may choose to follow these or not, and always feel free to work through discussion units in the order that makes sense to you.
The course title is "Introduction to Creative Writing: Fiction," and it is assumed that you may have never studied fiction, either as a field of creative writing or as a field of literature. This unit will address both issues: We will begin to define short stories and learn how we can usefully talk about them. We will also begin writing creatively for the class in a series of small exercises. Through these exercises, you will begin to know your writing tendencies and interests, as well as those of your classmates.
Other issues of beginning that we take on in this section are how stories themselves are begun, and how might we go about beginning the stories we will write for this class. We will look at various examples of how stories are begun, and at what technical issues writers face on page one. These examples will help each of you to find ways to begin your own story for the class.
