Fictional Narrative Basics - Character
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 5
[ Previous ][ 7 ][ Next ]
Writers use many methods of deciding what information is the right information. Often the writer herself must know more about the character before he or she can decide what information to include. Of course writers learn about characters through drafting the story, but a little advanced work in this area can help reduce the amount of extensive redrafting necessary. Painter and Bernays include a series of exercises designed to help the fiction writer learn more about their characters. A few of these are:

  • What If? Exercise 24 - Creating a Character's Background, Place, Setting, and Milieu from Robie Maccauley, p. 66.
  • What If? Exercise 26 - Put Your Characters to Work, p. 70.
  • What If? Exercise 29 - What Do You Know About Your Characters?, p. 79.

Select the one that interests you the most and complete it. This exercise will not be posted to the course site, but should be placed in the "Character" section of your craftbook.
