Fictional Narrative Basics - Description
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 5
[ Previous ][ 13 ]
Another revising tip has to do with the notion explored in the Character section that all of fiction writing is essentially persuasive, that is bent toward convincing the reader to continue reading. Description too should pass this test. Most good description does double duty, making the fictional world more vivid and moving the story forward in some other way such as developing character or forshadowing.

Go back line by line and look though your story, asking of each description, "What does this provide for the reader?" In most cases, if the best answer you can come up with is "It adds detail to the fictional world." it can probably be cut.
