Fictional Narrative Basics - Description
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 5
[ Previous ][ 2 ][ Next ]
Description as a skill is intimately tied with many other aspects of fictional craft. Description is one aspect of a writer's prose style, and it's an outgrowth of each writer's techniques and habits. Clear understanding of point of view (who is doing the describing), plot (what is important to describe) and character (communicating personality through sensory image) are all key to effective description.

What If? has no single section devoted solely to description exercises, because, I think, so many exercises that depend on descriptive ability are included in other sections. I have chosen to break this topic out in order to focus on the techniques and skills on a more detailed and isolated level, but there are clearly a number of exercises in What If? that make excellent ways to warm up for the topic. Choose any one of the following to complete. The exercise will not be posted to the course site, but should be placed in the "Description" section of your craftbook.

  • What If? Exercise 25 - The Hospital Room
  • What If? Exercise 73 - My Pet from Allison Lurie
  • What If? Exercise 76 - Faraway Places
