To return to "A Christmas Carol" as an example, in addition to seeing the story as using an argumentative plot structure, the story can be understood as a profluent plot with the four distinct phases. The exposition extends to about the point where Marley's ghost appears, the complication extends to about the moment where Scrooge sees his own grave, the climax is either that moment or the moment he wakes up safe in his own bed, and the resolution is the remainder of the story. We can plot these points onto the narrative arc:
