Most of our study of plot will be most useful after you have already written a partial or full draft of your story and are ready to go back and sharpen the material. Some writers plot out their stories completely before they start and some writers begin without any notion of where the story will end. Think about plot in writing your draft only as much as you find helpful. If you find yourself worrying about whether you have made some plot "mistake," you are clearly thinking too much about plot.
In my own writing, I find that I can keep no more than about three goals in my head, and still make any real progress toward accomplishing them. If I start to think about too many things I need to do, I don't get any of them done. If I concentrate on my three goals, then I usually find that I have done some interesting things along the way without knowing it.
Often time these "gifts" from my unconscious are plot opportunities that I would never have developed if I'd sat down and tried to plot out the piece. The tools we will develop for talking about plot are the tools you can use to go back and discover gifts you've left for yourself in the initial draft, and these tools will help you to consciously reshape such accidents to be more effective by design.
