As I've said, control over all of these elements can be learned with just a little bit of practice. Here's yours:

Start with the following sentence and alter it according to the instructions below.

"John ran down the dock just in time to catch the boat."

1) Rewrite the sentence in present tense.

2) Rewrite the sentence in first person.

3) Rewrite the sentence in second person and present tense.

4) Rewrite the sentence to include a thought in John's mind from the third person limited perspective.

5) Rewrite the sentence in the third person to include some judgment from the narrator about the action.

6) Rewrite the sentence (stay with a single sentence) to include thoughts from John and another character watching him, but no commentary from the narrator. (Third person multiple)

7) Rewrite the sentence in the third person to increase the psychic distance.

8) Rewrite the sentence in the third person to decrease the psychic distance.

9) Rewrite the sentence in a subjective point of view that provides some thought of John's plus some commentary by the narrative voice about some information John does not know, and in the present tense.

10) Rewrite the sentence with very close psychic distance, including thoughts and observations from John, another character, and the narrative voice.

This assignment will not be posted to the course site but should be placed in the "Point of View" section of your craftbook.
