Fictional Narrative Basics - Point of View
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 5
[ Previous ][ 12 ][ Next ]
One of the most obvious and powerful ways to reshape a story with respect to point of view is to rewrite the story from a different point of view. Often even very accomplished writers will complete a story or even a novel and decide it was done in the wrong point of view. They will then go back and redraft from a new point of view. Doing so forces a whole range of changes in addition to simply changing the verb conjugation or the pronouns used. It radically alters the way you communicate information to the reader.

Rewrite the first 600 words of your selected story from Best American, switching the point of view from first to third or from third to first, depending on which the story was written in originally. This is Exercise 30 in What If? and you may find it helpful to read over Pam Painter and Anne Bernays' notes before you start. This assignment will not be posted to the course site but should be placed in the "Point of View" section of your craftbook.
