Managing Fictional Narrative Flow - Epiphany
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 9
[ Previous ][ 2 ][ Next ]
Those of you who have completed the "Scene/Narrative Summary" section of the current discussion unit will remember that the final model of a narrative scene presented in the section identifies scene structures as being analogous to the overall narrative arc model presented in the "Plot" section of the Fictional Narrative Basics unit.

I've placed this section in the Managing Fictional Narrative Flow because while all of the techniques discussed here apply to the overall climactic moment of a story, they are also important to the climactic moments of individual scenes. These scene climaxes are critically important to managing the forward progression of a story because within the story these moments must be written so as to answer some questions while still raising enough others to propel the reader forward through the story.

This is one of the few instances within the course material that I will suggest you do one section before another--much of this section is necessarily based on concepts covered in the "Scene/Narrative Summary" section of this discussion unit, and I recommend that you complete that section first.
