Managing Fictional Narrative Flow - Epiphany
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 9
[ Previous ][ 9 ][ Next ]
Understanding epiphany is one thing; employing it as a writing technique is quite another. Fortunately, Pam Painter and Anne Bernays have a included in What If? a wonderfully articulated and useful exercise for developing facility with the technique. Exercise 61 - Show and Tell, on page 164, demonstrates skills used for conveying inner transformations, with some examples combining both the conflict-resolution model and the epiphany model. Complete Exercise 61, using your selected story from Best American for the first part of the exercise and the story you submitted to class for the second part. This technique can be very helpful if you feel you haven't quite captured the right note or feeling at the end of a scene or story. Please post this exercise in the epiphany section of the class craftbook.
