Managing Fictional Narrative Flow - Scene/Narrative Summary
Unit Completion Date: End of Week 9
[ Previous ][ 11 ][ Next ]
These alternating pairs of scene and summary operate together very much like small, independent narrative arcs, which lead one into another. Genette's notion of scene is a specialized usage of the term with respect to pacing, but these pairs of summarized narrative and scenic narrative probably more closely resemble a larger common conception of a scene. The summary generally serves to "set the stage" and provide the reader with the information he or she needs to know in order to understand the events to come, and the scenic narrative is used to play out or present the action with the maximum emotive effect for the reader.
