Finally, without a doubt, the best editing and style exercise I've ever done is to read aloud in front of an audience. No other experience makes you so acutely aware of flabby prose and unnecessary phrases. I invariably find myself cutting phrases, sentences, and even paragraphs when I read. If you can talk someone into following along and noting the cuts you make, you can clean up a text very efficiently in this way.
