Getting & Giving Help

At the end of this short discussion unit, we will begin the process of workshopping one another's stories. Some of you may have been involved in a fiction workshop before in a traditional class, and the first thing we all have to acknowledge is that this "workshopping" will not be the same as your other workshops. One of my greatest concerns with this class is that the elements of spontaneity and surprise present in a traditional learning environment are in large part absent from an on-line course, and this will be most true for the workshop portion of the class. I have been working on ways of addressing this issue, but there will be no getting around the fundamental truth that our on-line workshop will be substantially different from what it would be if we chose to gather as a class.
Our workshops will primarily consist of written critiques of one another's work, posted to the course workshop area. For each posting, I will ask follow-up questions (posted as responses to your critiques) to be answered by the reader (the person submitting the critique). In addition the writer under critique may ask clarification questions in response to the critiques, and other class members will be encouraged to enter into this ongoing discussion. This discussion portion of the critique will be important in bringing us to new understandings together that we would not have reached separately. One half of your critique grade will be based on the written critique you submit for each story, and one half will be based on your response to my follow up questions and participation in the discussion that follows. You are required to answer my follow-up questions.
To keep the workshops manageable for all involved, students will be broken into groups of 3-4. You will be responsible for critiquing ONLY those stories submitted by class members in your assigned group. Group assignments will be announced via e-mail and posted on the course site in the workshop section of the course site.
You will be receiving a grade for the critical reflection you submit with your draft, worth the same number of points as one critique. The grade will be posted in the critique column of the grade book corresponding to your story.
