It takes some practice to provide this kind of objective feedback, and in part, the exercises you've done to this point in the class have been just such practice. By this stage of the class, you have likely described in great detail the approaches to plot, character, description, and point of view used by the author of your selected story. Now what I would like you to do is repackage that information in the workshop critique format detailed on the previous page.
Pretend that you have received your selected story from Best American in a workshop, and write a critique for it. Select the two fictional elements that are most interesting to you, and follow the steps outlined on the previous page. At this point, you'll know more about the story than you can pack into a one-page critique, and this is fine. Part of providing good feedback is learning to be selective and not overwhelm the author with an exhaustive amount of information. This critique will serve as a warm-up exercise for you before we begin to critique one another's work. It will not be posted to the discussion board, but you should keep a copy in your personal craftbook.
