Fiction & the Real World - Introduction
Completion Date: End of Week 13

These four sections represent topics that are probably not immediately useful to a developing writer, but as you become more skilled, and perhaps pursue more formal education in creative writing, you may want to know more about. They are in fact topics that I rarely have time to address in my classroom-based courses, but am able to discuss here in our on-line format.
Approach these sections then, in that spirit. I don't expect that you will finish this discussion unit with a thorough understanding of literary criticism, or of realism. The publication section will not make a published writer of you. I don't expect that you'll have the time in the confines of this course to a tremendous amount of research for your stories.
The point is, there's a larger world of fiction out there, and fiction has its place in the world at large. I'd like for you to have at least some sense of what that world looks like, even if you never choose to visit. Enjoy, and don't panic if some of it sounds like a foreign language
(tOFP Note: Two of the four planned chapters in this discussion unit, "Research & Fiction" and "Critical Perspectives," were never written. In the five times I taught the class, not one student complained, mostly because by the end they were exhausted. Nonetheless, it's one of my OFP goals to complete these chapters, so stay tuned.)
