Publication is a subject that almost every writer is curious about. Ironically, even those students who swear they "don't write for an audience" ask a great number of questions about where they might send their work, what kind of cover letter to include, and how much magazines usually pay.

Before we address these issues, though, it's worthwhile to ask why a writer would want to attempt to publish her work. There are many good reasons to do so, and understanding clearly why you have entered into the process, as well as understanding the process itself, can make the whole experience more rewarding.

While most writers have at least dreamt of that elusive best-selling novel, the truth is that the vast majority of published writers--very good ones--never realize enough money or recognition to support themselves solely through writing.
